Where I am on my Decolonization Journey
What does it mean to be a Hong Kong Chinese settler trying to rediscover your own culture on the messy and complex land of so-called “Canada”-- When you have been exposed to the knowledge of how colonialism has and continues to destroy Indigenous peoples’ ways of knowing and being, but your Christian mom proudly decorates her condo with Canadian flags on July 1st, because they should be grateful for what coming here has given them and their families, right? I am seeking ways to bring decolonization into my relationships, my work, and into my community spaces. Only by sharing the truth and amplifying the lived experiences of those affected by colonization on these lands, can we move forward with reconciliation.
