Book Cover for This Grief Thing F**king Sucks
After receiving several cover options that I didn't love, I decided to design my own cover. Many attempts later and I arrived at this design.
In the cover, I wanted to capture both the hard and soft parts of grief while keeping the design modern and timeless. By mimicking a crest, or an antique oval portrait, I tried to capture the timelessness of grief, juxtaposed with the more striking book title. I also was really touched by the idea that my sister would be hugging an empty silhouette, symbolizing both the emptiness that grief can make us feel but also the lasting love that we have after our loved ones are gone. It was also intentional to have this image cover the word "F**king" which represents the many layers of grief that we can feel, and how many different emotions can exist at once.
À propos de l'artiste
Taya Mikado is a first-time author and long-time scholar of grief and resilience. At thirteen she lost her father to suicide, and at eighteen her mother to a motorbike accident. In an effort to share more about life with grief as a young adult, and to befriend her own grief, she wrote and self-published This Grief Thing F**king Sucks. Taya hopes that this book can can sit within the grief space as an item prompting solidarity and helping others to further understand grief.
Growing up in Lethbridge, Alberta, she studied and performed poetry from a young age in Speech and Drama classes. She went on to achieve an honours degree in Philosophy from the University of British Columbia and is currently pursuing law school (fitting grief into her busy schedule).
